The Nairobi Expressway has become an iconic infrastructure project in Kenya’s capital city since its completion in 2022. This 27km elevated highway stretches from Mlolongo near JKIA airport to James Gichuru Junction on Waiyaki Way, providing a smoother and faster route through Nairobi.
As the only tolled road in the city, motorists need to obtain a toll card from Moja Expressway to access the Expressway. Cards can be purchased in person at their office next to Ramtons on Mombasa Road or applied online.
Effective January 1st, 2024, the government has increased the toll fees across all stations along the Expressway’s Mlolongo-Westlands route. The new rates range from Ksh 170 to Ksh 500, up from the previous Ksh 100 to Ksh 310.
Here are some key details on the new 2024 toll charges:
– Mlolongo to Eastern Bypass: Ksh 250
– Mlolongo to Southern Bypass: Ksh 330
– Mlolongo to Capital Centre or Haile Selassie: Ksh 410
– Mlolongo to Museum Hill or Westlands: Ksh 500
– Shorter routes like Syokimau-SGR or JKIA-Eastern Bypass: Ksh 170
The rates are the same for opposite routes, like Westlands to Mlolongo costing Ksh 500. Lighter vehicles under two axles pay 1.5x these rates, while heavier trucks pay 4-5x depending on their axle count.
Be sure to get your toll card updated if driving on the Nairobi Expressway during your visit to Kenya’s capital! The increased fees fund the maintenance and operations of this key transportation artery.
