Kenya Officially Drops Visa Requirement for All African Countries

Kenya has officially removed visa requirements for all African and most Caribbean countries. This means that citizens from these regions no longer need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization, fill out long forms, or pay any visa fees. Travelers can now simply arrive at the border and enter the country without any hassle.

However, the exemption does not apply to Libya and Somalia, as the government has flagged both countries as security risks.

What the Visa Changes Mean

The new policy allows African visitors to stay in Kenya for up to two months. For nationals of the East African Community, the stay duration remains at six months, as outlined in existing free movement agreements within the region.

According to the Cabinet, the move is expected to strengthen Kenya’s position as a regional hub and promote tourism and trade. President William Ruto noted that removing entry barriers makes travel easier and helps build stronger ties between Kenya and the rest of the continent.

In a notice released in January 2025, the government announced plans to enhance the overall travel experience. A key part of this is the proposal to grant Electronic Travel Authorization exemptions to all African countries except Somalia and Libya due to security concerns.

The government also committed to introducing faster processing systems that would allow travelers to receive ETA approvals instantly or within 72 hours, depending on capacity. Additionally, a new passenger information system will be launched to improve pre-screening, boost security, and make processing at entry points more efficient.

Kenya Introducing Nomad Visas

In October 2024, President Ruto announced the introduction of a digital nomad work permit. This visa will allow remote workers to live and work in Kenya for extended periods while enjoying the country’s diverse experiences.

To support this, the government is expanding its fiber optic network, ensuring that tourists and digital workers stay connected as they travel across Kenya. The president also introduced a new type of short-term Electronic Travel Authorization that allows tourists to explore the country for up to 12 hours.

This means travelers with connecting flights no longer have to wait at the terminal. Instead, they can explore nearby cities and attraction sites during their layovers.
