The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi is taking significant strides to support innovation and entrepreneurship in Kenya with the launch of American Corner Mtaani at the Kenya National Library Service (KNLS). This new facility is the sixth addition to the network of American Corners in Kenya, joining established locations in Nairobi, Nakuru, Mombasa, and Lamu.
A Hub for Young Entrepreneurs and Start-ups
American Corner Mtaani aims to serve as a collaborative hub for young Kenyan entrepreneurs and start-ups. Supported by a $70,000 investment from the United States in partnership with KNLS, the facility will provide a space for creativity, learning, and dialogue.
Ambassador Meg Whitman, who spoke at the launch, emphasized the commitment to enhancing people-to-people partnerships. “American Corner Mtaani is here to support Kenya’s young people in bringing their innovation to life,” said Whitman. “Let’s open the doors and enable the greatest minds to take the Silicon Savannah to the next level.”
Access to Resources and Training
Shakaria Buckson, the embassy’s regional public engagement specialist overseeing American Corners across East Africa, highlighted the inclusive nature of the facility. “We want to meet people where they are and enable them to access resources and training to move closer to their career goals and aspirations,” noted Buckson. She stressed the importance of grassroots opportunities for innovation and learning.
The new American Corner will provide the local community with access to various U.S. resources, including digital databases, speakers, and educational materials. It will host programs focusing on the creative economy, entrepreneurship, leadership, technology, and cultural exchanges.
Supporting Equitable Educational Opportunities
Dr. Charles Nvizo, CEO of KNLS, emphasized the collaborative effort to ensure equitable access to high-quality educational opportunities. “The foundation of this collaboration is the belief that everyone should have equitable access to high-quality educational opportunities. American Corner Mtaani is concrete proof of our nation’s dedication to supporting its citizens,” he said.
American Corner Mtaani will operate Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except during holidays. The center will offer cultural programs covering entrepreneurship, health, and education, led by American and Kenyan experts. The eLibraryUSA will provide a digital collection of trusted resources, including top newspapers, magazines, journals, and dissertations.
Additional Services and Opportunities
Visitors to American Corner Mtaani will have access to free internet and Kanopy Films, offering hundreds of documentaries across various genres. Additionally, the center will provide information on U.S. colleges and universities, offering comprehensive details about U.S. higher education opportunities.
