Etihad Airways Resumes Flights To Nairobi: Gateway to Adventure

Etihad Airways has resumed its flights to Nairobi, marking a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Kenya. This development is set to provide a major boost to tourism and business travel between the two regions, making it easier to visit Nairobi.

In a statement, the Kenya Airport Authority (KAA) expressed their excitement over the resumption of Etihad Airways flights, highlighting the improved connectivity that will benefit travelers from both the UAE and Kenya. “We are thrilled as Etihad officially resumes flights to Nairobi, enhancing connectivity between the UAE and Kenya,” the statement read in part.

KAA Board Chair Caleb Kositany warmly received the inaugural flight from Abu Dhabi to Nairobi at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), noting that this resumption marks a significant milestone in the aviation landscape.

Increased Connectivity and Travel Options

Announced in August 2024 and taking effect on December 15, Etihad Airways now operates four non-stop flights a week between Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport (AUH) and Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO). This move enhances passengers’ travel options and strengthens the ties between the UAE and Kenya.

Etihad’s Vice President of Network and Scheduling, Lena Havia, praised the UAE and Kenyan authorities for cooperating in authorizing the resumption of flights. This collaboration underscores the company’s commitment to fostering strong international relations and promoting seamless travel experiences.

A Growing Commitment to Africa

Etihad Airways is dedicated to expanding its presence in Africa, with plans to double its routes to the continent over the next year. Previously, the airline served destinations including Johannesburg, Cairo, Mahe, and Casablanca. With the resumption of flights to Nairobi, Etihad is set to launch new routes to Tunis, Algiers, and Al Alamein in the coming year.

Etihad’s Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer, Arik De, emphasized the airline’s commitment to growing its African network. “We are expanding our frequencies, including boosting both Johannesburg and Casablanca to daily services from next summer,” he said. “This expansion will connect our guests across the continent with our growing network and bring them to our fantastic home in Abu Dhabi.”

Future Expansion Plans

Etihad Airways is not stopping at Africa. The airline has recently announced ten new global destinations, including Tunis and Algiers, with plans to unveil at least ten more each year as they grow towards 2030. “These will include new cities in Africa, and our goal is to make all of these flights daily,” Arik De stated. “We are growing sustainably and offering our customers across Africa the flights and frequencies that make sense to them and fit with our global network.”
