Planning Your Trip
With its moderate altitude climate, Nairobi enjoys pleasant weather for visiting year-round. However, the city does have two distinct rainy seasons that impact activities. Use this guide on the best times to visit Nairobi for smooth travel planning.
- Dry Seasons
The long dry periods from June to October and January to February are ideal times for a Nairobi vacation. With little chance of rain, days are warm and sunny perfect for game drives, outdoor exploration and comfortable sightseeing. With mostly clear skies, views of landmarks like Mount Kenya are unobstructed. Hot air balloon safaris operate smoothly in prime morning conditions. Lodges and camps have lower rates during these shoulder seasons too compared to the busy tourist seasons.
- Rainy Seasons
Nairobi’s rainy seasons run from March to May and November to December. The rains generally come as afternoon showers or thunderstorms, so mornings still allow for dry weather touring. Some lodges close during the heavier late spring rains, so plan accordingly. Bring rain jackets and waterproof shoes if visiting during the wetter spring months. Avoid dirt roads which can become impassable.
- Peak Tourism Seasons
From late June through October, Nairobi experiences higher prices and crowds drawn in by the annual Great Migration when millions of wildebeest travel across the Mara plains. Book well in advance during these months. Christmas and New Year’s weeks also attract more visitors. But Nairobi offers plenty of entertainment and cultural immersion during shoulder months too.
While weather patterns determine ideal travel periods, Nairobi offers attractions all year long. Check forecasts and plan your visit during dryer seasons for easy movement. Or embrace the lush green landscape and lower crowds during wetter months. Whenever you choose to visit, Nairobi’s moderate climate offers the chance to experience this vibrant city.
