1. August 7th Memorial Park – Nairobi

Open Daily 9:00am-5:00pm( Sunday1-5pm)

Located at the intersection of Moi Avenue and Haile Selassie Avenue, this park commemorates the tragic 1998 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. Today, it stands as a quiet, landscaped space of remembrance. The park features sculptures crafted from the blast debris and a memorial wall bearing the names of the victims. The onsite Visitors’ Centre includes a museum with exhibits that promote peace and tolerance, and an auditorium screening a documentary about the attack, offering a powerful example of dark tourism in Kenya.

2. Kenya National Archives – Nairobi

Weekdays 8:00 am-5:00 pm

Established in 1965, the Kenya National Archives and Documentation Service (KNADS) safeguards over 40,000 volumes of public records. The institution’s mission is to preserve Kenya’s documentary heritage and provide public access to official records. KNADS operates under the Ministry of Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage, with branches in Nairobi and other major towns, including Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nyeri. Located centrally in Nairobi, the Archives also include an impressive gallery showcasing historical photographs, artifacts, and African art.

3. Lamu Old Town – Lamu County

A living relic of Swahili culture, Lamu Old Town is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, the town features narrow alleyways, coral-stone buildings, and intricately carved wooden doors—an architectural blend of Swahili, Arabic, Persian, Indian, and European styles. Inhabited for over 700 years, Lamu remains a vibrant cultural hub with historic sites such as the Lamu Museum, German Post Office, and Lamu Fort. Its enduring Islamic heritage is visible in the town’s festivals, scholarly traditions, and close-knit community.

4. Mijikenda Kaya Forests – Coastal Kenya

Spread along 200 kilometers of Kenya’s coastal region, the Mijikenda Kaya Forests are sacred sites made up of the remains of fortified villages known as kayas. Created in the 16th century and later abandoned, the kayas are now revered by the Mijikenda people as ancestral abodes and spiritual spaces. Maintained by councils of elders and overseen by the Coastal Forest Conservation Unit (CFCu), these forests represent a unique blend of ecological and cultural heritage. They were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.

5. Fort Jesus – Mombasa

Dominating the Old Port of Mombasa, Fort Jesus was built by the Portuguese between 1593 and 1596 to protect their interests in the Indian Ocean trade. Designed by Italian architect Giovanni Battista Cairati, it is a striking example of 16th-century Renaissance military architecture. The fort’s structure—with its geometric proportions and coral stone construction—embodies the era’s ideals of harmony and defense. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, Fort Jesus also reflects the region’s complex colonial history, showcasing the cultural interplay between African, Arab, Persian, Turkish, and European influences.
